Anthropic Suspends Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Models on Friday Over U.S. Export Controls

According to CNBC, Anthropic suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models late Friday (June 12) to comply with a U.S. government export control directive citing national security authorities. The company abruptly disabled the models for all customers but said other models would remain unaffected.

The move highlighted supply chain risks for enterprises relying on proprietary AI models and sparked renewed interest in downloadable open-source alternatives. Chinese open-source models from DeepSeek, MiniMax, and Zhipu surged in adoption mentions, as companies increasingly seek models they can run independently on their own infrastructure without vendor dependency risks.
