The EU will hold an emergency summit to respond to Trump's "island seizure" tariffs

PANews January 19 News, according to Xinhua News Agency reports, EU Commission spokesperson Oluf Gyll announced on the 19th that the EU will hold an emergency summit in Brussels, Belgium, on the 22nd to discuss issues such as U.S. President Trump’s announcement to impose tariffs on European countries opposing the U.S. and Greenland, and to assess possible EU countermeasures. Gyll said that in response to Trump’s tariff threats, contact and communication between the EU and the U.S. are ongoing “at all levels.” The EU is also conducting intensive consultations with member states on possible response measures. The EU will “make every necessary effort” to protect its interests. Gyll stated that the EU’s primary task is “to engage rather than escalate.” However, he said that if the U.S. implements the aforementioned tariffs, “the EU has tools at its disposal and is prepared to respond.”
