Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of Indonesia’s largest and oldest public universities, has announced plans to begin storing student course records on-chain through Space and Time, a decentralized database platform. Under the initiative, students who complete courses will have their credentials recorded directly on the network, creating immutable, verifiable records they can share with employers or other institutions.

Scott Dykstra, co-founder and CTO of Space and Time, said the project aims to expand access to modern education, particularly for the unbanked, while giving students a secure and transparent way to prove their achievements worldwide.

Rollout and AI Lab Launch

The program will initially cover English proficiency courses before expanding to other academic areas. UGM, with an estimated 60,000 students, also unveiled a new on-campus AI laboratory built on Dreamspace, a tool powered by Space and Time. The lab will offer training on developing and deploying artificial intelligence applications.

The initiative follows a partnership between Indomobil Group, one of Indonesia’s largest automotive companies, and the Space and Time Foundation, which now oversees the decentralized database originally created by MakeInfinite Labs.

Verifiable Education and Financial Access

The framework has two main components. The first centers on verifiable education: by moving course completions and diplomas on-chain, students can avoid fragmented academic records and maintain a single, trusted credential. The second component focuses on financial access, with each student receiving a wallet preloaded with Space and Time’s native token, SXT, to cover tuition and fees without relying on traditional banking infrastructure. The company confirmed there would be no cost to students.

Broader Context and Challenges

The rollout comes as Space and Time gains traction in global markets, with Grayscale launching an investment trust tied to its SXT token earlier this year. The platform’s custom chain aggregates data across blockchains, distributing it through validators that generate cryptographic proofs to ensure data integrity.

Still, questions remain over the broader adoption of blockchain in education. A 2025 ASEAN report noted that digital credentials can improve cross-border recognition of qualifications but cautioned that uneven digital readiness could deepen inequities between well-resourced and underfunded institutions.
