Codex launches "Electronic Pets": Essentially an agent status floating window supporting AI custom generation

Abstract generation in progress

According to Beating monitoring, OpenAI has added the “Codex Pets” feature to the Codex desktop app. You can raise an animated pet right in the interface. Type /pet in the editor to wake it up. On the surface, it’s a playful Easter egg—but in reality, it’s an agent status floating window: the pet hovers above other applications as an overlay, showing in real time the current Codex thread’s status (running, waiting for input, awaiting review) and a progress summary. After switching windows, you won’t need to keep going back to Codex to see where the agent is.

It includes several built-in preset pets. You can also use the hatch-pet skill to have the AI automatically generate a custom pet based on your project, with attributes such as species, personality, rarity, and more.
