On January 8, Chainalysis released a research report showing that in 2025, tracked state activity in the cryptocurrency field increased significantly. Illegal organizations now operate large-scale on-chain infrastructure, helping transnational criminal networks acquire goods and services, and laundering their illegally obtained cryptocurrencies. Additionally, stablecoins dominate the illegal transaction sector, currently accounting for 84% of all illegal transaction volumes.
Data shows that illegal cryptocurrency transactions in 2025 reached at least $154 billion. This represents a 162% increase from the previous year, primarily due to a 694% surge in funds received by sanctioned entities. However, even if the amount received by sanctioned entities remained flat compared to the previous year, 2025 would still be a record-breaking year for cryptocurrency crime, as activity in most illegal crime categories has increased.
