Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s cloud computing division, was attacked by drones and experienced physical infrastructure damage in the Middle East, triggering regional cloud service disruption risks, highlighting the direct impact of geopolitical conflicts on critical digital infrastructure.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon stated that recently, drones “directly hit” two of its facilities in the UAE and caused infrastructure damage near a facility in Bahrain. The company said that due to physical damage, full recovery is expected to be a lengthy process.

At the service level, Amazon warned that customers are experiencing higher error rates and decreased availability. The company noted that two regional data center hubs are “still severely damaged,” while a third regional hub is operating normally, but some services are indirectly affected due to reliance on the impacted hubs.

For the market, this incident further amplifies the economic spillover effects of the conflict. Bloomberg reports that the conflict has shaken multiple locations in the Middle East and has propagated to global energy markets, with oil prices soaring. Due to risk considerations, oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has nearly halted, and regional operational uncertainties have increased simultaneously.

Confirmed damaged facilities, two hubs “still severely affected”

On Tuesday, Amazon stated that among its three regional data center hubs, two are “still severely damaged”. The company also pointed out that the third hub is currently operational, but “some services are indirectly impacted due to dependence on the affected hubs.”

Amazon disclosed for the first time that drones “directly hit” two of its facilities in the UAE. In Bahrain, the company reported that a drone attack near a facility damaged related infrastructure.

Recovery expected to be prolonged; customers advised to back up and migrate workloads

Amazon said it is working to restore full service availability as quickly as possible, but given the nature of physical damage, recovery will take longer. The company noted that customers are currently facing higher error rates and decreased availability.

In response, Amazon recommends that customers in the Middle East back up data and consider migrating workloads to other Amazon regions. Amazon also disclosed that it operates 39 regions and a total of 123 availability zones worldwide.

Escalating geopolitical conflict increases operational uncertainty, affecting supply chains and business operations globally

Amazon pointed out that even as recovery efforts proceed, ongoing regional conflicts mean the overall operating environment in the Middle East remains “unpredictable.” The company stated that beyond publicly available information, it declines to comment further.

Bloomberg reports that the scope of the conflict’s impact has expanded, with explosions heard in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.

The economic impact has spread to global energy markets, with rising oil prices and near-stalled tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz due to risks. Coupled with cloud service disruption risks, businesses and investors are increasingly concerned about regional supply chain and operational continuity.
