(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump declared Saturday that a diplomatic resolution with Iran is now more attainable than ever, citing the impact of joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes and the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Much easier now than it was a day ago, obviously,” Trump said in a phone interview with CBS News, asserting that the offensive had proven effective and could open a lane toward negotiations.

Trump offered a cautious but pointed remark on Iran’s post-Khamenei leadership vacuum, stating that “there are some good candidates” to steer the country forward — though he declined to name them or provide further detail.

When pressed on Iran’s retaliatory actions, Trump was measured. “It’s what we expected,” he said, adding: “We thought it’d be double. Thus far, it’s been less than we thought.”

The comments came hours after Trump had signaled no letup in the military campaign following confirmation of Khamenei’s death. In a social media post earlier Saturday, Trump made clear the offensive would press on without pause.

“The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary,” Trump wrote.

The remarks mark a notable rhetorical pivot — from escalation to potential engagement — as Washington and its allies assess the strategic fallout of one of the most consequential military operations in the Middle East in decades.
