$7.8 Million Scandal: How "Bitcoin Rodney" Orchestrated a Ponzi-Style Cryptocurrency Scam

The U.S. Department of Justice has exposed one of the boldest cryptocurrency scams in recent years. Rodney Burton, better known as “Bitcoin Rodney,” is at the center of a federal investigation revealing how an influential figure in the crypto community allegedly diverted millions of dollars from trusting investors. Between June 2020 and February 2022, Burton reportedly collected over $7.8 million directly through a scheme that prosecutors describe as a “classic Ponzi.”

The Scheme: From HyperFund to HyperVerse

What started as HyperFund was later rebranded as HyperVerse, an investment program promising extraordinary returns to participants. According to federal indictment documents, the project offered investors packages that supposedly generated up to a 1% daily return. However, these promised gains lacked any real economic foundation.

Prosecutors claim the model operated without any identifiable financial product, blockchain-related income, or economic activity backing the promises made. Instead, the advertised returns came directly from deposits of new investors, a hallmark of any pyramid scheme-based crypto scam.

A Classic Cryptocurrency Scam: Promising 1% Daily Without Real Backing

What is particularly revealing about this case is how the funds were used once in Burton’s hands. Federal investigators documented transfers with no apparent economic justification:

  • $1.2 million transferred to a business partner
  • Approximately $920,000 distributed to recruiters
  • Unrecorded personal expenses, including the purchase of a Rolls Royce
  • Funds whose traceability disappears in transactions with no clear commercial purpose

This uncontrolled redistribution of capital significantly worsened the charges against Burton. Prosecutors formally added charges of wire fraud and participation in a massive fraudulent scheme after analyzing on-chain data.

Burton: From Influencer to Builder of the Fraud Network

Rodney Burton was not a passive participant in the scheme. He enjoyed considerable notoriety in the crypto ecosystem, fueled by previous collaborations with celebrities like Jamie Foxx and Rick Ross. He publicly positioned himself as a financial educator, using this credibility to promote HyperFund through social media and live events.

What prosecutors consider crucial is that Burton deliberately operated as the central recruitment vector. His personal influence was instrumentalized to attract investors seduced both by the promised returns and his lifestyle. Beyond superficial promotion, Burton actively structured the ambassador network and coordinated a paid chain of recruiters, establishing himself as a key element in the expansion of the fraudulent system.

Authorities argue that Burton was fully aware that the model lacked viable foundations but continued promoting the program knowingly of its true nature. This proactive role now forms the cornerstone of the investigation and justifies the severity of the charges.

The Crackdown Intensifies: Lessons After Do Kwon

The Burton case adds to a series of high-profile cases marking a significant shift in the crackdown on crypto fraud. Just months ago, Do Kwon, founder of the failed Terra-Luna project, received a 15-year sentence after being found guilty of massive fraud. This pattern suggests that U.S. justice is determined to establish clear and exemplary consequences.

If Burton is found guilty on all charges — wire fraud, money laundering, and participation in a fraudulent scheme — he could face several decades in federal prison. The upcoming trial will determine whether “Bitcoin Rodney” follows the same path as previous controversial figures, setting a new precedent in the judicial pursuit of crypto scams led by industry influencers.
