On February 28th local time, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a speech at the Security Council regarding the current Iran situation. He strongly condemned the large-scale military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as Iran’s subsequent attacks on several regional countries. The Secretary-General stated that the current situation poses a serious threat to international peace and security, calling for an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to the negotiating table. He urged relevant parties to de-escalate the situation and stop hostilities, warning that the conflict could escalate further and cause serious consequences for civilians and regional stability. He also urged all parties to return to negotiations, especially on the Iran nuclear issue. Guterres simultaneously called on all member states to strictly adhere to the UN Charter and international humanitarian law, respect and protect civilians, ensure nuclear safety, and work together to prevent further escalation of the situation.
