US Congressman Expresses Concern for Baby, Mother Detained by ICE

(MENAFN) US Representative Joaquin Castro expressed serious concern Tuesday regarding the well-being and immigration status of a two-month-old infant and his mother held at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dilley, Texas.

Castro said he and his team have been in contact with the family, noting that the baby, reportedly suffering from bronchitis, became unresponsive “at some point in the last several hours."

“Juan was still discharged from the hospital despite that around midnight today,” he wrote on the US social media platform X.

The congressman added that the infant’s mother appeared before an immigration judge Tuesday morning and was informed that she would be deported, though no specific date or destination country was provided.

“Both Juan and his mom are back at Dilley and their future remains uncertain. We are all deeply concerned that Juan and his mom will be deported and that Juan’s health will continue to deteriorate,” Castro said.

He also sharply criticized ICE, stating, “His life is in danger because of ICE’s monstrous cruelty."

The incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of ICE and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations, particularly following the deaths of two US citizens during enforcement actions in Minnesota in January, which prompted public protests and demands for accountability.
