From 150 new stores to an exclusive strategy: Wing and Walmart redefine the drone delivery industry
Turning Point in Strategic Partnership
The relationship between Wing (, a subsidiary of Alphabet), and Walmart continues to grow strongly. Recently, these two giants announced an impressive plan: Wing will expand drone delivery services to an additional 150 Walmart locations nationwide. This is not just a number, but clear evidence of trust and the effectiveness of this model.
According to Heather Rivera, the new business director of Wing, the expansion process will take place from now until 2027, starting with existing facilities in Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta. This plan is implemented after the company successfully tested and is now deploying in Houston ( starting from January 15), while also preparing for major cities such as Orlando, Tampa, Charlotte, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami.
The Numbers Say It All
When the project is completed, Wing will be present at more than 270 Walmart stores, capable of serving about 10% of the U.S. population. This figure proves that drone delivery services are no longer a future concept but have become a reality.
Statistics from Wing show that there is a real demand: about a quarter of top customers use this service three or more times a week. The most frequently delivered items include fresh tomatoes, eggs, ground beef, butter, lemons, lunchables packages, and popular snacks. This choice indicates that customers use the service not only for urgent needs but also for regular daily shopping.
Technological Innovation and Capacity Upgrades
To meet the expansion demand, Wing is also upgrading its technology. Recently, the company completed its first commercial flights with larger drones capable of carrying payloads of up to five pounds. This advancement opens up possibilities for delivering larger and more diverse orders.
From Testing to Commercialization
This partnership story began in 2023 when Wing and Walmart launched a pilot program at two stores in Dallas, serving about 60,000 households. This initial success led to rapid expansion to 18 Walmart Supercenters in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, followed by a presence in Atlanta. The “simultaneous expansion” model was applied in Atlanta with six stores launching simultaneously, demonstrating Wing’s testing of multiple strategies to optimize deployment.
Long-term Vision and Market Ambitions
Rivera emphasizes that long-term profitability depends on delivery volume. “My mission here is to drive sustainable growth for the company,” she said, while stressing that expanding to as many locations and markets as possible is the foundation for long-term success.
Although Wing also partners with other platforms like DoorDash, Walmart remains the main strategic focus. This focus shows that Wing understands that building a strong partnership with a major retail partner is far more valuable than spreading resources thin.
