South Korean Z Generation Drug Lord Uses Bitcoin for Money Laundering and Drug Trafficking, Sentenced to 20 Years and Fined $4.2 Million
Recently, the main culprit of a Z-generation drug lord gang that used Bitcoin for money laundering and operated a drug distribution network worth $4 million was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Ulsan District Court in South Korea and fined $4.2 million. Three of his accomplices, involved in drug trafficking and money laundering, received sentences ranging from 30 months to 3 years.
According to local reports, the unidentified gang leader began selling drugs online in March 2020. He recruited accomplices to set up multiple Telegram drug sales channels, selling various drugs such as synthetic cannabis, marijuana, LSD, and methamphetamine, illegally imported from Vietnam.
The gang adopted a 'dead letterbox' transaction model, hiding drugs in public places, contacting buyers via Telegram, and conducting transactions and settlements using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
Prosecutors stated that between March 2022 and May 2023, the gang completed nearly 12,000 drug deliveries, with over 7,000 kilograms of methamphetamine pills alone. The drug lord also used cryptocurrencies for money laundering and paid a 10% commission to distributors after each order.
The presiding judge stated in the verdict that this type of drug trafficking model, which combines encryption technology with international logistics, makes it increasingly difficult for law enforcement to combat and is spreading rapidly. It is considered a highly anti-social crime that must be severely punished.
The judge also pointed out that the drug trafficking model pioneered by this drug lord has been imitated by other criminals, leading to a surge in new drug users and drug-related crimes, severely disrupting social order.
The report also noted that Korean Telegram channels have become "drug department stores" for young people in the country, with many users paying for drug transportation costs using cryptocurrencies.
Additionally, there are still many street slang advertisements on X platform and public Telegram channels openly promoting "nationwide delivery" services for drugs such as methamphetamine, ecstasy, and synthetic cannabis.
In summary, these phenomena indicate that although law enforcement agencies have shown a firm resolve to crack down, completely eradicating this covert criminal network that combines encrypted communication, cryptocurrencies, and modern logistics remains a serious enforcement challenge for the country.
