Additionally, Reports on Meta Allowing Children to Access Harmful AI Receive Recognition, Demonstrating the Powerful Oversight Role of the Media.
The 2026 Pulitzer Prize List Announced, Focused on Trump Scandal Reporting
Regarded as the highest honor in American journalism, the 2026 Pulitzer Prizes were announced on May 4th. This year’s winners focus on policies and actions of the Trump administration, with four award-winning reports directly related to it.
Pulitzer Prize Jury Chair Marjorie Miller emphasized in her speech that the media currently faces severe challenges, such as restrictions on access by the White House and Pentagon, and Trump filing high-profile defamation lawsuits against multiple media outlets.
Over one-third of the awards this year went to local news organizations, showing that local media still play a key reporting role despite survival pressures.
Below is a summary of the main winners of the 2026 Pulitzer Prizes (scroll horizontally on mobile for the table). For the full list, click here.
Overview of the 2026 Pulitzer Award-Winning Major Reports
The New York Times: Exposing Trump’s Use of Power to Enrich His Family
The New York Times team won the “Investigative Reporting Award” for their in-depth investigation. The series detailed how Trump broke conflict-of-interest restrictions and exploited presidential powers to make money, enriching his family and allies.
The report specifically highlights that Trump’s confidants and family members leveraged relationships with Persian Gulf countries and participated in cryptocurrency companies to gain huge benefits, though the Trump family denied the findings of The New York Times investigation.
The Washington Post: Documenting Trump’s Reforms and Musk’s DOGE Chaos
The highly anticipated “Public Service Award” was given to The Washington Post. The Pulitzer Committee noted that the Post’s reporting pierced through the secrecy of Trump’s chaotic restructuring of federal agencies, with detailed records of billionaire Elon Musk’s leading role in drastically cutting federal agency budgets in the DOGE chaos, exploring the impact of layoffs on ordinary citizens and the consequences for the nation.
Reuters: Exposing Trump’s Political Retaliation and Potential Dangers of Meta AI
Reuters received this year’s “National Reporting” and “Feature Reporting” awards. In the national reporting category, the media documented how Trump used comprehensive government tools—including initiating criminal investigations, revoking security clearances, and canceling university research funding—to politically retaliate against hundreds of targets such as federal prosecutors, military leaders, and media companies.
Reuters technology investigative reporter Jeff Horwitz and China correspondent Engen Tham won the Feature Reporting Award.
Using internal documents and innovative testing methods, they exposed how social media giant Meta knowingly allowed users, including children, to access harmful AI chatbots and scam ads.
The report pointed out that Meta’s internal guidelines explicitly permitted AI robots to engage in sensory-stimulating conversations with children, which even led to a man with cognitive disabilities running away from home and dying after talking with Meta’s chatbot.
The report triggered global regulatory investigations and prompted Meta to immediately revise its AI guidelines.

Miami Herald: Epstein Sex Abuse Case
Julie K. Brown of the Miami Herald received the “Special Recognition Award.” In 2017 and 2018, he authored a series titled “Perversion of Justice,” revealing the systematic abuse of young women by the late billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.
The report detailed the judicial system’s protection of Epstein and his powerful network of accomplices and enablers, exposing how prosecutors at the time shielded him from charges of sexual exploitation and human trafficking, successfully giving voice to many victims.
Due to the release of new Epstein files by the Trump administration last year, involving emails with notable figures such as former UK Prince Andrew, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates, the case has regained public attention, and this pivotal report was the source of that renewed focus.

2026 Pulitzer News Photography Awards
In the field of photojournalism, this year’s winning works profoundly reflect global conflicts and the fragility of human life.
The “Breaking News Photography Award” was given to Saher Alghorra, a Palestinian-American photographer for The New York Times, who captured scenes of severe destruction and famine in Gaza caused by the Israeli war.
The Pulitzer Committee praised his work as a series of unforgettable and sensitive images that reveal the harsh reality faced by local residents suffering from famine and war.
The “Feature Photography Award” went to Jahi Chikwendiu of The Washington Post. His photo essay documented a young family’s experience as the father, diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer, gradually approached death while welcoming their first child.
The photos show father Tanner Martin, diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at age 25 in 2020, lying in a hospital bed holding his wife’s hand, while she cradles the newborn.
The Pulitzer Committee described it as a heartbreaking yet beautiful work that touches the soul.
