2026 Pulitzer Prize Winners: Awarded for exposing Trump using power to enrich family, and Musk DOGE chaos reports
The 2026 Pulitzer Prizes announced, with multiple major awards focusing on the Trump administration, including exposing Musk’s DOGE chaos and using official powers for personal wealth. Additionally, reports on Meta allowing children to access harmful AI were also recognized, highlighting the powerful oversight role of the media.
2026 Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced, Focus on Trump Scandal Reporting
Regarded as the highest honor in American journalism, the 2026 Pulitzer Prizes were announced on May 4th. This year’s winners focus on policies and actions of the Trump presidency, with four award-winning reports directly related to his administration.
Pulitzer Prize Jury Chair Marjorie Miller emphasized in her speech that the media currently faces severe challenges, such as White House and Pentagon restrictions on press access, and Trump filing high-profile defamation lawsuits against multiple media outlets.
More than one-third of the awards this year went to local news organizations, demonstrating that local media still play a critical role in society despite survival pressures.
Below is a summary of the main 2026 Pulitzer winners (scrollable table for mobile users). For the full list, click here.
2026 Pulitzer Major Reports Overview
The New York Times: Exposing Trump’s use of power to enrich his family
The New York Times team won the “Investigative Reporting Award” for their in-depth investigation. The series detailed how Trump bypassed conflict-of-interest restrictions and exploited presidential powers to make his family and allies wealthy.
The report specifically highlights that Trump’s confidants and family members profited through relationships with Persian Gulf countries and involvement in cryptocurrency companies, though the Trump family denied the findings of the NYT investigation.
The Washington Post: Documenting Trump’s reforms and Musk’s DOGE chaos
The highly anticipated “Public Service Award” was given to The Washington Post. The Pulitzer Committee noted that the Post’s reporting pierced through the secrecy of Trump’s chaotic restructuring of federal agencies, with detailed records of billionaire Musk’s leadership in drastically cutting federal agency budgets, the DOGE chaos, and the impact of layoffs on ordinary citizens, as well as the consequences for the nation.
Reuters: Exposing Trump’s political retaliation and potential dangers of Meta AI
Reuters won this year’s “National Reporting” and “Feature Reporting” awards. For the national report, the media documented how Trump used comprehensive government tools—including initiating criminal investigations, revoking security clearances, and canceling university research funding—to politically retaliate against hundreds of targets including federal prosecutors, military leaders, and media companies.
Reuters technology investigative reporters Jeff Horwitz and China correspondent Engen Tham also received the Feature Reporting Award.
They used internal documents and innovative testing methods to reveal that social media giant Meta knew about but still allowed users, including children, to interact with harmful AI chatbots and scam ads.
The report pointed out that Meta’s internal guidelines explicitly permitted AI chatbots to engage in sensory-stimulating conversations with children, which even led to a man with cognitive disabilities running away from home and dying after talking with a Meta chatbot.
The report sparked global regulatory investigations and prompted Meta to immediately revise its AI guidelines.

Miami Herald: Epstein sex abuse case
Julie K. Brown of the Miami Herald received the “Special Recognition Award.” In 2017 and 2018, he authored a series titled “Perversion of Justice,” revealing the systematic abuse of young women by the late billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.
The report detailed the judicial system’s protection of Epstein, along with a powerful network of accomplices and enablers, exposing how prosecutors at the time shielded him from charges of sexual exploitation and human trafficking, successfully giving voice to many victims.
Due to the release of new Epstein files last year by the Trump administration, involving emails with notable figures like former UK Prince Andrew, Musk, and Bill Gates, the case regained public attention, and this important report was the source.

2026 Pulitzer News Photography Awards
In the photojournalism category, this year’s winners deeply reflect global conflicts and the fragility of human life.
The “Breaking News Photography Award” was given to Saher Alghorra, a Palestinian-American photographer for The New York Times, who captured scenes of severe destruction and famine in Gaza caused by the Israeli war.
The Pulitzer Committee praised his work as a series of unforgettable and sensitive images that reveal the harsh reality faced by local residents suffering from famine and war.
The “Feature Photography Award” went to Jahi Chikwendiu of The Washington Post. His photo essay documented a young family welcoming their first child, with the father gradually succumbing to colorectal cancer.
The photos show Tanner Martin, diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer at age 25 in 2020, lying in a hospital bed holding his wife’s hand while she cradles their newborn.
The Pulitzer Committee described it as a heartbreaking yet beautiful work that touches the soul.
