OpenAI’s mobile phones could arrive as early as 2027, with MediaTek potentially securing the processor orders exclusively
According to Beating Monitoring, Tianfeng International Securities analyst Guo Minghao updated an industry report, saying that OpenAI may be accelerating the development of its first AI agent phone (a phone that enables an intelligent agent to perform tasks on the user’s behalf), with mass production targeted as early as the first half of 2027. At present, MediaTek is more likely to secure exclusive processor orders. The chips are expected to use a customized version based on the Dimensity 9600, and be manufactured by TSMC using N2P process technology in the second half of 2026.
This is more aggressive than what Guo Minghao disclosed last week: “MediaTek and Qualcomm participate in processor development, Luxshare serves as the exclusive system coordination and manufacturing partner, with mass production planned for 2028.” The new points are mainly focused on bringing forward the mass production timeline and narrowing down the chip suppliers. He believes the reasons OpenAI is accelerating phone development may include a favorable year-end IPO narrative and intensifying competition in AI agent phones.
In terms of specifications, Guo Minghao said the device’s ISP will strengthen high dynamic range output to support real-world visual perception. Other key configurations include a dual NPU architecture (layered processing of AI computations with different intensities), LPDDR6 + UFS 5.0 (to ease memory and storage bottlenecks), and pKVM + inline hashing (security isolation and data integrity mechanisms). If development goes smoothly, Guo Minghao expects total shipments of the device to be about 30 million units in 2027 and 2028 combined.
